Kanni Ayilyam: Divine Celebrations and Sacred Rituals at Pampady Pampukavu
Located near Thiruvilwamala in the Thrissur district, Pampady Pampukavu (Shree Nagaraja Temple) is one of Kerala’s most revered holy abodes for serpent worship. While thousands of devotees visit throughout the year seeking the blessings of the Serpent Gods, the Ayilyam Mahotsavam in the Malayalam month of Kanni stands out as one of the most spiritually significant occasions.
On this auspicious day, a sea of devotees gathers at the Kavu to offer prayers to Lord Nagaraja and Nagayakshi for freedom from doshas and overall prosperity.
Why is Kanni Ayilyam Significant?
Although special pujas are conducted on all Ayilyam asterisms—considered the birth star of the Serpent Deities—the Ayilyam falling in the months of Kanni and Thulam holds exceptional spiritual significance.
Mitigation of Serpent Doshas: Offering prayers on Kanni Ayilyam is believed to cure various astrological afflictions, including Naga Dosha, Rahu-Ketu Doshas, and Sarpa Kopa (curse of the serpents).
Fulfillment of Desires: Devotees perform key rituals on this day to seek family prosperity, blessings for children, good health, and matrimony.
Key Rituals and Offerings
The festival proceedings begin early in the morning with Nirmalya Darshanam, followed by the Maha Ganapathi Homam.
Noorum Palum: The most sacred offering to Lord Nagaraja and the Nagas, consisting of a traditional blend of rice flour, milk, and turmeric.
Vellari Yidal (Offering Cucumbers/Grains): A sacred ritual involving the offering of raw rice, fresh coconut, and special offerings.
Sarpa Bali & Maha Payasa Homam: The elaborate Sarpa Bali and the sacred Maha Payasa Homam conducted at the Kavu are major highlights for visiting devotees.
Pulluvan Pattu: Soulful renditions of traditional snake songs (Naga Pattukal) by Pulluvans elevate the spiritual ambience of the grove.
Prasadam Feast and Amenities
The temple trust and committee make extensive arrangements for all devotees attending the Ayilyam Mahotsavam. A grand Prasadam Feast (Annadhanam) is arranged in the afternoon for all visitors.

നാഗദേവതകളുടെ ജന്മനക്ഷത്രമായി കരുതപ്പെടുന്ന ആയില്യ നാളുകളിൽ പ്രത്യേക പൂജകളും ചടങ്ങുകളും നടക്കാറുണ്ടെങ്കിലും കന്നി, തുലാം മാസങ്ങളിലെ ആയില്യത്തിന് വലിയ പ്രാധാന്യമാണുള്ളത്.

നൂറുംപാലും: നാഗരാജാവിനും മറ്റ് സർപ്പദേവതകൾക്കും സമർപ്പിക്കുന്ന ഏറ്റവും പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ട വഴിപാടാണിത്. പാലും മഞ്ഞൾപ്പൊടിയും ചേർത്തുള്ള ഈ വഴിപാട് സർപ്പപ്രീതിക്ക് അത്യുത്തമമാണ്.
വെള്ളരിയിടൽ (വെള്ളരി ചൊരിയൽ): ഉണക്കലരിയും നാളികേരവും അഷ്ടനൈവേദ്യത്തോടൊപ്പം അർപ്പിക്കുന്ന പുണ്യ ചടങ്ങ്.
സർപ്പബലി & മഹാപായസഹോമം: കാവിലെ വിശേഷാൽ സർപ്പബലിയും മഹാപായസഹോമവും ഭക്തരുടെ പ്രധാന ആകർഷണമാണ്.
